THE FUTURE OF EMBEDDED SYSTEMS

The computational requirements for embedded systems are rapidly increasing. In particular, the next generation of automotive vehicle systems will depend on methods such as real time image processing, sensor fusion and intelligent predictive control, all of which demand a large increase in the processing performance required of forthcoming automotive electronic control units.

The semiconductor industry is continually developing techniques to cram more and more transistors onto each chip, but the challenge for system designers has become how to effectively utilise the increased raw performance whilst still meeting functional safety goals. Techniques such as multi-core processors and large caches are common in consumer electronics but are less appropriate for safety-critical, real-time control systems, where deterministic performance is of paramount importance.

HARNESSING HARDWARE ACCELERATION TECHNOLOGY

As the cost per transistor continues to plummet, the future will be dominated by specialised hardware accelerators. Each accelerator can be tailored to the specific processing required, maximising performance and providing strong real-time guarantees. Until now, designing these hardware accelerators has required specialist knowledge that has put them out of reach of control engineers.
